Medieval helmets

The Medieval helmet was one of the most important parts of any knights armor.

The changes in helmets were due to several factors including improvements in metalworking, and a better understanding of the need on the battlefield. The helmet shown at left is available on amazon.com COMBAT EUROPEAN HELMET

More Information

The development of helmets over the centuries

In the early centuries the construction of the medieval helmet was crude because metal working skills were still basic. These early helmets were often in the shape of a bucket or cylinder. But as Metalworking and Blacksmithing skills improved these helmets got stronger, lighter and better in shape and fit.

Full Size (wearable) Medieval Helmets

COMBAT RIVETED HELMET

This is a good example of a helmet from the earlier periods of medieval warfare. Notice the cylindrical almost can like shape and the rivets. Metal working had not been full developed yet.

BRASS CRUSADER GREAT HELMET

This is another early period helmet and it has a very can-like shape. But the addition of the golden cross on the face makes it quite spectacular.

Tournament Battle Helm

This exquisite full-size helm follows the style of the armet a helm generally used during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This piece has a full visor hinged at each cheek which can easily be raised or lowered. The visor has many ""Breathe"" holes providing adequate vision with superior protection. This particular piece comes with a fully-functional gorget the armor that protects the neckthroat and upper part of the chest. A leather strap and buckle allow for entry and exiting of the piece insuring a snug fit. The gorget has a decorative golden band encircling the helm.

LIMITED EDITION- GONDORIAN INFANTRY HELM

This is a great example of how medieval helmet making and design has taken some wonderful shapes in modern day, and getting their inspiration from fantasy movies and books. This helmet is from Lord of the Rings and is a gondorian infantry helm. It is simply beautiful. Its also a collectors item but a bit out of the price range of most average collectors.

Royal Guard Close Helm - This is a great example of a later period helm. Notice the curved shapes and how it more closely fits a human head. Much more comfortable than a can-shape. It also has an attached gorget and a visor that can be raised.

This is one of our finest medieval helms!  This beautiful museum-quality, late 15-th century replica is full-size and ready to wear.  Typical for close-helmet design, the Royal Guard Close Helm has an artistic visor that pivots open from bolts on each side of the skull.  This helm also includes a fanciful bevor, which consists of the plate armor protecting the chin and lower face, including the gorget. This wonderful helm is crafted in solid steel with brass accents. It makes an impressive addition to any collection!

Another great example of the beauty of the movies being brought to real life and in this case a little bit more real than normal because it is a Larping helmet.

Black Barbarian Helmet of Execution

This helmet is a good example of the psychological effect that helmets can have. Not just on the battlefield but also on the chopping block! Just plain intimidating.
